TIRUNELVELI: With their eyes tied with a piece of black cloth, house surgeons of Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and postgraduate students of Tirunelveli Medical College continued their sit-in protest on the TVMCH premises on Sunday.
While thanking the Chief Minister for announcing a “marginal rise” in the stipend for house surgeons and the salary for postgraduate students, the protestors said the Minister for Public Health M.R.K. Panneerselvam, who invited the protesting house-surgeons and the PG medical students for talks, read an already prepared text and showed a Government Order pertaining to the “marginal increase,” instead of holding talks with the dissenting students.
Categorically rejecting the insignificant rise announced by the State Government, the protesting students said they could not accept this minor increase and withdraw their agitation even as the neighbouring States were giving a reasonable and decent stipend and salary for house surgeons and PG medical students.
“Our protest will continue with more vigour as long as the Tamil Nadu Government accepts our genuine demand of Rs. 10,000 as stipend for house surgeons and Rs. 25,000 salary for PG medical students,” they said.
